FEATURED PHOTOS OF THE MONTH #43 (March 2007) |
Rana temporaria, Common Frog
March 11, 2007; Budis, Turcianske Teplice, Slovakia
Finally, this year I did not miss Common Frog mating. It lasts only for a week or so and it is not that easy to predict. This year, due to
warm winter and spring it occured a month earlier than usually. Morover, I was lucky to be there
during the peak and I had an excellent weather. This was one of my strongest encounter with frogs. I was in the middle of hundreds
of excited frogs, sometimes it felt as if the water was boiling. Even more fascinating was that each specimen was so
specific in color and pattern - I realized that in amphibians, colouration is the last ID mark to rely on.
Umbra krameri, European Mudminnow
March 28, 2007; Landesmuseum, St. Polten, Austria
One of my targets in photography this year are small mammals and fish. In March I have finally visited Landesmuseum
in St. Polten (I travel often to Austria for work). It is a very nice museum with one exhibition focused on water.
They have several cold-water aquariums with some interesting fish species there. Most happy I was seing and
photographing European Mudminnow, a critically endangered species.
