FEATURED PHOTOS OF THE MONTH #45 (May 2007) |
Hirundo rustica, Barn Swallow
May 1, 2007; Ruzina, Lucenec, Slovakia
I was driving with my friend to check shorebirds at Ruzina dam, when I saw a floc of swallows repeatadly
flying and coming back to power lines not high from the ground. We stopped there and I spent the entire evening
trying to get a decent flyight shot. Light and wind conditions were perfect and the image above is exactly what I
wished for.
Dendrocopos medius, Middle-spotted Woodpecker
May 16, 2007; Mucin, Lucenec, Slovakia
This is one of many photos of MS Woodpecker I made on May 16th. I have to thank my friend Marian Mojzis, who found
this unusually low nest hole. These woodpecker usually nest higher in the trees, this one was an exception with
the cavity just about a meter above the ground. It was a great experience to spend one day with a family of these
beautiful insect-eaters.
Triturus alpestis, Alpine Newt - male
May 27, 2007; Gaderska dolina, Turcianske Teplice, Slovakia
I am trying to photograph Newts for a few years and all I can say is that it is damn difficult. I have tried
everything - from photographing on location in an aquarium, in an aquarium at home, on land, on a moss, etc. This
is so far the most natural looking photo I got - this is how you will find these newts in wild - in shallow water pools.
